MARIN just tested the newly built mAUV (modular Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). The underwater video below shows a short demonstration of the full 6 degrees of freedom vehicle control of this new mAUV in the Seakeeping and Manoeuvring Basin. The images are a little shaky, thanks to the hand-held camera. The vehicle is shown in calm water, staying in a fixed position and meanwhile performing combined rotations in roll, pitch and yaw. The results of the first tests confirm most of the predictions that we made with our XMF time-domain simulation models. Future work will focus on vehicle autonomy, additional actuators and improving the control system performance at higher forward speeds.
